Bear Dog Cares bundles

The Lakota Wellness Society is a 501c3 organization established to help our people work toward becoming physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually healthy. The onset of the corona virus pandemic (COVID-19) has adversely affected healthy citizens in every community in Indian Country. As a result of the pandemic, we are working to distribute essential supplies in Bear Dog Cares Bundles.

The Lakota Wellness Society is located on the Rosebud Reservation, which encompasses all of Todd County, South Dakota (1,388.2 square miles). There are approximately 30,000 tribal citizens enrolled with the Rosebud Sioux Tribe and about half of the tribal membership resides within the exterior boundaries of the Rosebud Reservation. The Sicangu Lakota Oyate (Burnt Thigh Nation) are known world-wide for living in one of the poorest counties in the United States; 64.2% of children under 18 years of age live in poverty (US Census Bureau). Basic needs are often unmet due to abject poverty. The distribution of essential supplies will offset the needs of vulnerable tribal citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are seeking hand soap, shower gel, shampoo/conditioner, lotion, paper products, cleaning supplies, hand sanitizer, etc. Non-perishable food items are also accepted. Other essential items needed include, food sovereignty items, garden seeds, gardening tools, educational supplies, etc. Bear Dog Cares Bundles are assembled and distributed by volunteers.

The distribution will be on a monthly or emergency basis throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Our tribal elder population (60+) as well as Sicangu youth (0-18) will have first priority for a Bear Dog Cares Bundle.

We are accepting essential supplies and/or food from donors/organizations located both on and off the reservation. Consequently, any donations coming from off the reservation would be sanitized before distribution.

Now, more than ever, meeting the basic needs of our vulnerable tribal citizens is critical. Basic household, personal items and non-perishable food above are in great demand and some supplies are limited. The majority of our households on the Rosebud consist of several families living in one home. We are working to offset some of the stress of obtaining these critically needed supplies to our most vulnerable elders, children and other tribal citizens.
